Looking forward to getting my poster in from the printer’s next week!
I promised my grandmother I’d speak at her funeral which is this saturday. We expect 150 people, I have 2 minutes. This will be the largest group I’ve ever spoken to.
Here’s my speech:
I’m sorry that Grandma’s gone. She loved all of you, she loved me and we loved her. When someone dies at a good old age like grandma, with family by her side, we can definitely celebrate a life well lived!
The last time my wife and I were with Grandma was a day or two before she died. She had prepared 3 helpful peices of advice, which actually were commands. It seemed to me She’d put a lot of thought about them. You’re welcome to honor her too by trying to follow these commands with me.
Her first command was: “I don’t want you to be sad when I’m gone, because I’ll be in a better place.” We can always turn to the Lord for all of our comfort and this occasion is no different. God knows what suffering is like, he sent his own son to suffer for us. So if you’re suffering today, you’re not alone. Because of Jesus we can have grandma’s confidence about new life.
Her second command was, “Be good to each other”. This is not easy. I can become clouded by selfishness and pride, I can do what I think is right for me. I hide from the truth, if I do, I hide from reality, I hide in darkness and I isolate myself from relationship. Granda was a tough woman who spoke the truth in love and humility. She was always good to us-especially-when it was hard. When you think of grandma remember to be good to each other. By being in relationship with Jesus we too can develop and carry the kind of selfless character we know and love so much in Pearl.
The third command I’ll just quote. “I don’t want Longos to cater my funeral because they have big buns. I don’t like big buns.” …If you’re here today hoping for a nice big bready bun after-I’m sorry for your loss.
So remember grandma’s 3 commands: Don’t be sad when I’m gone because I’ll be in a better place. Be good to each other and have a small bun on me!
Great article about why it’s important to keep in touch with your customers. I have lots of room for improvement here. It’s easy to get into “projects” but relationships can start to fade.

I love this article said, “…when senior executives begin to prioritize labor productivity over service, they often start to erode the competitive distinction that led to the premium pricing. It’s one thing to purposefully pivot away from a premium position. It’s another to creep away from it without making a clear strategic choice.”
So true. Starbucks also brought in automated machines much to the ire of some coffee fans. I’m not sure if they’re better or worse, but that move seems to fit into this model of labor productivity over service and quality.
When starbucks started books about their branding success described how customers could get drinks in real mugs when (drinking in-store) instead of paper cups because the mug delivered a superior tactile experience. In my experience starbucks seems to moved to paper cups. Maybe it’s cheaper to not have to wash mugs constantly. All of this serves to strengthen the smaller independent coffee shops who remember the personal details.
